Ralph Spies: Wall-paintings on concrete slabs in the church of St. Jacobi, Wanzleben (Germany). Investigation into the specific causes of deterioration. Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:
Abstract: The murals in the northern and southern porches of St. Jacobi's church were painted by the Berlin artist Melchior Lechter in 1894. The paintings were executed on walls consisting of ,Betonwanddielen" (concrete slabs), wich were erected in front of existing walls with a small gap in between. Most of the grounding and paint layers along the joints have been severely damaged. The investigation is concerned with the causes of this specific phenomena. The possible impact of moisture, salts and climate on the wall-paintings is examined both in theory and in practice. The work includes an art historical classification of the wall-paintings as well as recommendations for their conservation.
