Overview:

Abstract: The main focus of this master thesis lies on the specific problems of conservation concerning the material of two feathercrowns. Furthermore, a concept of presentation is developed.
The crowns come from the Easter Island (Rapa Nui), from the eastern polynesian area of Oceania. They were probably made in the last third of the 19th century.
First, the two round feathercrowns are introduced regarding their arthistorical and historicocultural context. Thereby, the discovery of the Easter Island from an European point of view is analized as well as the technical construction of the feather - headdresses. Later, the exposure of the present materials of both crowns in a technological way follows. The chapter closes with a concept of conservation of the highly contaminated feathercrown Inv.Nr. V63. In addition, general cleaning methods for feathers and methods of pest control are considered.
The thesis closes with a demonstration of a possible presentation of the exhibits. In this connection, commendable materials, the construction of a showcase as well as the arrangement of the objects in an exhibition are described.
