Overview:

Abstract: With it´s northern extensions, the lobby, the library and the chamber of blessing, the church of St. Marien possesses inestimable assets and provides unaltered impressions of the handicraft of the past centuries. The materials principally used, the manual processing and the constitution of the interior and exterior are evidences of the industrial arts of the middle ages. A responsible treatment of the cultural heritage is fundamental.

The aim of the master-thesis is the authentical maintenance of the historical surfaces of the building with regard to it´s future utilization. Therefore a concept of conservation for the handling of the original building substance will be proposed. The concept of conservation is based on examinations of the historical materials and handicrafts and comprises the identification and definition of materials and techniques used and changes made in the past. The observations are based on phenomenological and empirical techniques helped by scientific analysis. In addition, past and ongoing structural damages and factors causing these damages will be examinated and documented.
