Overview:

Abstract: Other than their visible main surface, the margins of paintings are mostly protected by frames. They often provide information about the original condition of the painting or later adaptations and changes. To protect and preserve these areas as carriers of valuable information the rabbets of frames should preferably be lined or padded. In this Bachelor Thesis 13 selected materials for the padding of rabbets of picture frames are being presented and examined for their applicability. Different glues to attach the padding materials to the rabbet as well as various different materials which can be used as separators for glassed paintings are also being exemplified.
To allow precise predications about the durability and aging behaviour, all materials were tested under extreme climate conditions in a conditioning cabinet for the duration of 23 days.
