Overview:

Abstract: Since the mid-15th century, various well-known master builders have shaped Hartenfels Castle in Torgau from a heterogeneous castle with its adjoining buildings, dating from the late middle ages, to a modern castle with living quarters. The castle’s history has been diverse since having lost its function in courtly use by the end of the 18th century. In comparison to the rest of the castle and despite extensive changes to its construction, the Flaschenturm has the most intact remains of the once prestigious architectural decorations: the richly decorated, polychromatic sand stone portal and murals. Plans are for the tower to be restored and used as a museum. Results of the research analysis which where initiated in 2005 are being used to develop a concept. The master thesis at hand is intended as a contribution to this. The use and history of conservation of the tower, especially of the portal was researched as comprehensively as possible whereas detailed research on the securing of the findings at the portal was done. Eleven polychromatic works of architectural sculpturing dating from the 16th century from Torgau and Dresden are being used to be able to do a comparative analysis in particular regarding the paintwork remains and preservation of the Flaschenturm portal. The thesis ends with recommendations for future use of the portal with regards to conservation, its history, the aesthetics as well as aspects of general preservation. As a test a sample area had been created to review and illustrate these recommendations.
