Overview:

Abstract: This paper deals with the problems of removal and respectly the separation of layers of mastic varnishes on multilayered paintings.
In this paper, conventional methods, like the removal of varnish by solvent and solvent gel, will be compared with unconventional methods like the removal of mastic varnish by laser beam and also the thinning of oleiferus mastic varnishes by lipases.
On test sheets, there should be analised, if it is possible to remove the uppermost varnish layer without damaging or affecting that one too much, which is beneath.
One main focus of the evaluation of these test series is the examination of the structure of the exposed surface and the manageability and the economc efficiency of these methods.
In the last part of this paper, there will be searched for an alternative, i.e. for an organism, which has got the ability to use the mastic resin by himself as nutrition, to thin the layers of mastic varnish or even to remote them. This test could be seen as a beginning for another kind of the removal of mastic varnish. At that point, there can start further examinations.
