Overview:  
Abstract: Ray- and sharkskin as well as man-made structured animalskin is titled shagreen. Ray- and sharkskin is mostly found on such objects like swords and furniture of the Art Deco period. The skin is built up similar to any other animalskin but its surfacetexture is unique. It is formed by the tooth like fish scales the so called placoidscales. One aim of this diploma is to give an overview of history and use of shagreen in Western Europe and East Asia. The other topic is to find a suitable gap filling material and technique for missing parts of ray- and sharkskin, the most common damage to such with shagreen covered objects. This was done by testing different materials and techniques in an climatic test. The so found technique used Parafilm as an isolationmaterial, dyed Technovit 4004 as gap filling and salianksy sturgeon glue as adhesive. It was applied by conserving a japanese sword of the Ethnographic Museum Hamburg.
