Nils Unger: Restoration of historic Clocks – between repair and conservation. Two clocks in fragmentary condition from the state museum of Burgenland, Eisenstadt Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Based on two fragmentary preserved bracket clocks from the state museum of Burgenland, Eisenstadt, the discussion of care and maintenance of historic clocks has been revived. The objects involve a bracket clock from Burgenland with remains of the case made of poliment-gilded wood (around 1800) and a french bracket-clock with partly fire-gilded, partly galvanic-gilded metal case made of brass and zinc (around end of 19th century). The discussion over the criteria of restoration as well as the usefulness of the commissioning of historic clockworks form the basis for the preparation of an action plan and its implementation.
Phenomenon of damage such as wear and tear, repair and consequences of mature lubricants are decidedly described. While the focus of the French clock is put on conservation, the case of the clock from Burgenland will be restored in the form of additions.
