Overview:
Abstract: Using gamma-rays for killing any kind of microorganisms in or on an item is a save method to combat contaminated materials in library resources. In recent years researches concerning the effect of gamma-rays on the chemical and physical properties have shown that a radiation dosage ≥ 10kGy causes a drastically reduction of the tensile strength and a reduction of the pH-value. Furthermore, the paper shows yellowing when it is exposed to high gamma-ray doses. These observations result in an accelerated aging of gamma-ray exposed paper.
Since there is marginal literature which discusses the influences of gamma-rays on other materials like leather or parchment. This study focuses on the implication of gamma-rays on leather based book covers. The shrinking temperature, the change of the pH-value and chromaticity are analyzed, compared and discussed, respectively.
