Overview:

Abstract: Mirrors are a largely unexplored field in conservation research. The mirror owned by the Schwarzenberg – family in Vienna will be examined with conservation science, art historical and scientific methods. Research enables to clarify the complex composition affected by previous restauration treatments and provides important clues for dating the object (1710-1730). At the same time the problems of conserving tin-amalgam-mirrors will be discussed. Practical work concentrates both on conservation and restoration. All measures are exemplary carried out on the upper part of the mirror. Among cleaning as well as the repair and filling in of breaks and losses oft he mirror glass, work is focused on finding adequate nontoxic methods for closing defects in the original tin-mercury-layers and applying new reflective layers on individual glass pieces instead of completely corroded ones.
