Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This diploma project features the so-called “Coral Crèche” from the treasury of Klosterneuburg Abbey. Dated to the second half of the 17th century it originates from Trapani, the Sicilian centre for coral work. The thesis presents a survey of the cultural historical background of coral, its composition, retrieval and production. At the same time the project examines the complex restoration history of this crèche, which is fundamental to the clarification of its substance and condition. Practical work focuses on the conservation and restoration of coral, a largely unexplored field. As particularly the working procedures dealing with cleaning and gluing involve considerable difficulties, the thesis discusses possible methods of scientific conservation and restoration methods, which have been tested by a series of sample treatments.
