Overview:

Abstract: The use of lacquer as an artistic design medium on Persian paintings is dated back to the beginning of the 16th century. complex layering of watercolours, metal onlays, paper inlays, as well as coloured and transparent lacquer make this kind of painting interesting for science and conservation. A 19th century painting from the book cover collection of the `Stiftung museum kunst palast` served as the subject for analytic researches to specify the media used in the painting. Based on the results of this analysis an applicable conservation concept for lacquered paintings was elaborated and practically realised. The visual reintegration of missing areas in the painting had priority throughout the process. This thesis aims to complement and contribute to the low state of research of Persian lacquered paintings, the technological accomplishment in particular, as well as the missing knowledge regarding applicable conservation measures.
