Overview:

Abstract: An object and damage report is issued for a theological manuscript belonging to the historical archive of the city of cologne from 1475. The report especially focuses on damages caused by the collapse of the archive. By means of several construction site dust samples the composition and the danger potential of the contamination is analyzed. Test samples are used to experiment with dry cleaning which eliminates the construction site dust of the parchment and paper surface. Furthermore the possibility of using the method of gassing with carbon dioxide is discussed. Aging tests are supposed to give information concerning the possible effect of the construction site dust on pigments and organic colorants of illuminations. Several different possibilities for regaining shape and stabilization of broken deformed wood lids are explained in a theoretical part. Finally a restoration and conservation concept for the manuscript, based on the previous results of the test series, will be considered.
