Overview:

Abstract: Thangkas are a part of many western ethnographic collections. These complex and fragile objects consist mainly of textiles and easel painting. Some considerations about ethics, handling, museum display and conservation treatment are made. Some typical damages based on the thangka-collection of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim are illustrated. A detailed description of a thangka from the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen is given and a documentation is made. Finally, conservation treatment methods are proposed and advices about future storage and display are presented.
