Abstract: The chapel of the Türnich castle, with its interior decoration and design is a fine example for the Historism in the german Rheinland. The artist Franz Guillery created and executed the wall paintings of the chapel between the years 1895 and 1897.The murals are oil based paintings, which are laid out on glue isolated plaster layer. Due to several different influences which have damaged the paintings, the murals are now in a quite bad shape. This diploma thesis focuses on the existence and on the actual condition of the wall paintings and tries to analyse the damaging mechanisms.
