Overview:

Abstract: An initial definition of the terms value and significance in ethical conservation approaches and the treatment of these ideas in basic international papers generate the basis for the assessment of values and significance of cultural heritage. It is then shown how values and significance are embedded in heritage preservation particularly in the conservation field. Subsequently, in view of the practice-oriented part of the thesis, an insight is given into the methods of value and significance assessment. Finally, based on a selected collection of Baining masks from East New Britain of the Museum der Weltkulturen, Frankfurt am Main, a value and significance assessment is implemented.
