Sofie Schmelter: A chinese painting on woven paper. Investigation, documentation and conservation Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The Tapetenmuseum Kassel owns a special piece of chinese folk handicraft: a painting on paper was cut into fine stripes not more than 2 mm wide, which were then woven with white paper stripes of the same width. The paper that was used for the painting is very fragile and tends to break easily. A support paper was partly glued upon and therefore led to tensions and crinkles. Besides, a previous impact of water has left dark water stains on the painting. This paper concerns the provenance of the chinese paper woven pictures and an analysis of its materials. After an examination of several techniques for the removal of water stains and a comparison of different infillings, the best methods were carried out in the conservation of the damaged woven paper.
