Overview:

Abstract: Bacterial cellulose is a new material discovered in bioengineering. As a grown and dried fibrous web it has been tested for book hinge repairs. But also ground up bacterial cellulose can be used to help reinforce and bind the papermaking process. This thesis analyses the options of using ground up bacterial cellulose for paper conservation. Various cellulose mixtures of bacterial and vegetable fibers, fillers and adhesives are produced to test their mechanical properties and their long term stability. The application of bacterial cellulose for leafcasting, pulp infills or mending is carried out on machine made, transparent and coated papers as well.
