Overview:

Abstract: The following thesis focusses on a Cabinet, dating from the Mid 17 th century. Presumingly it was fabricated in Italy. The front is decorated and veneered with graved ivory plaques. Due to former restaurations some of the engravings have lost their depth and brilliance. The concept of restoration is based on several analyses on the materials, research on the constructional techniques and the historical craftsmenship of the cabinet maker. Therefor the focus is put on the question how to deal with the ivory engravings, which requires not only a specific knowledge about ivory as an material but also an expertise in dealing with the problems which occur in the combination of both materials, ebony and ivory.
