Overview:

Abstract: The thesis deals with a model ship of a five-masted ship-rigged windjammer from the collection of the Schiffbau- und Schifffahrtsmuseum (museum for shipbuilding and shipping) in Rostock and its various types of damage. The different analysed materials, such as wood, glass, lead, copper and iron wires, textile threads, paint etc. reveal correspondingly various types of damage like mould, dirt, corrosion and detached fragments.
The presented thesis gives a detailed technical analysis of the object, partly with the use of computer-tomography. The damages and their causes are explained and a concept for the cleaning and consolidation of this delicate work of art with such distinct damages is developed. The focus lies on the handling of damaged lead components and the cleaning of the object. The concept is completed with instructions for an appropriate storage of the object.
In addition the object is documented in detailed drawings and some definitions of shipbuilding are explained. The comparison with the five-masted ship-rigged windjammer “S.S. PREUSSEN”, which was probably used as an original, reveals similarities and differences.
