Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The Papyrus Museum at the Austrian National Library in Vienna possesses a collection of Late Antique/Early Islamic, so-called „Coptic“ textile fragments from Egyptian burial fields. Numerous textiles were stuck together with rubber-based adhesive tapes or paper tapes and some of them were partially glued to cardboard. In addition to documentation and an extensive technological and conditional survey, the main focus of the conservation work lays on the removal of adhesive tapes and the reduction of adhesive residues from selected fragments. Different methods of removing adhesive tapes from paper artefacts are presented in literature, especially dealing with paper. Scientific analysis enables the identification of the composition and solubility of the adhesives. The results of the analysis and test series help to adapt and apply the researched methods to the special requirements of the textiles.
