Franziska Stoldt: Filling materials for large-scale losses in paint layers of wooden panel paintings. Conservation and Restoration of an altar wing (1515) from the Universalmuseum Joanneum Graz Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The diploma thesis features one of two surviving altar wings with depictions on both sides and large-scale losses in ground and paint caused by water damage. The main focus is on appropriate fillings and retouching procedures for the losses. Properties of fillers and binding media are discussed and currently-used fillings are evaluated based on an international survey. By carrying out a series of tests, including accelerated aging, different combinations of binding media and fillers are tested.
Furthermore, earlier conservation treatments left a dark brown layer of binding media which affects the appearance adversely. The removal of this brown glutin glue film, formerly applied for consolidation, presents a particular conservation problem.
