Abstract: In the inventory of the early sketchbooks of Otto Modersohn (1865 – 1943), four books were found to have missing covers. The presented thesis attempts to develop conservation bindings for these books. Therefore, an assessment of the actual physical condition of the books is made, followed by an analysis of the main problems regarding the damage and degradation of the binding, as well as the use of acidic wood-pulp paper. The current state of research regarding techniques of conservation bindings as well as the phenomenon of acidic wood-pulp paper is then presented and applied to the sketchbooks and their preservation. In several tests on models, different bindings are tested practically, finally leading to a conclusive recommendation for the preservation of these unique books.
