Eva Netenjakob: Collections Care for Small Museums Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Small museums, often orientated on local history, constitute nearly half of all German museums. They often possess only voluntary staff as well as low funds and little space. To which extend is collections care for small museums done by a conservator and how can it be improved?
After depicting existing qualitative possibilities of encouragement by national and international programs a survey of the Museumsverband für Niedersachsen und Bremen e.V. of 2004 clarifies the situation in collections care of small museums in Lower Saxony. Three interviewees from Lower Saxony highlight topics like for example awareness of the museums employees as well as approaches to improvement.
An analysis of a selected small museum, based on current literature of preventive conservation including assessment and recommendations for improvements, shows problems and chances.
