Maren Dümmler: „White seals“ – degradation phenomena and restauration Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The main subject of this master thesis is the study of typical degradation phenomena on medieval wax seals, also referred to as ‘white seals’. During the degradation process the wax is splitted into thin layers structured parallel to the seal surface (leading to total decay). Due to scientific research, carried out to gain more insight into this problem, the cause of this process could be clearly identified. A number of problems associated with these seals was also encountered during the conservation treatment and the choice of best consolidant for these seals during repair had to be identified. After various physical tests, the water soluble synthetic resin Aquazoll(R) 200 was found to provide a sufficient bond, and was therefore brought into use at the Landeshauptarchiv Koblenz.
