Abstract: In context of this Master thesis a technical study of eleven Ethiopian icons from the 15th to 18th centuries is described. Ten icons are kept in the deposit of the Munich State Museum of Ethnology, one is in private hands. The thesis includes a brief synopsis of the history of Ethiopian painting and the development of the trade relations especially concerning art materials. Typical damages could be clarified and the use of definite formats was worked out. The focus was on the comparison of the research results which could lead to a general statement to manufacturing techniques. The technical study provides insight into icon production in Ethiopia from the 15th to 18th centuries.
