Abstract: The efforts to preserve the Prince Portal of the Bamberg Cathedral date back to the 17th Century. Although in the past numerous different conservations were accomplished always the damage progress continued. In this master thesis, the data for the construction, conservation, restoration and investigation history compiled and evaluated regarding of the condition status. The climatic situation of the portal before the translocation of the portal figures, the salt efflorescences, the characteristics of natural stone and ist weathering properties and the chemical and physical-mechanical properties of the preservation materials were discussed and evaluated in terms of the visual damage. It was shown that the decay of the figure decoration at the Prince Portal of the Cathedral of Bamberg has ist cause not in a singular damage process, but in a combination of several interlinking damage mechanisms.
