Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This master thesis investigates the painting technique of the German Expressionist painter Heinrich Campendonk. The study aims to provide a basis of understanding about his painting technique by using various technical art examination methods. Part of the study focuses on the evaluation of archive material; specifically of selected written records relating to Campendonk’s painting technique. In the practical part eighteen paintings on textile support are investigated by the use of non-invasive scientific techniques. The paint surfaces were observed under visible light and UV radiation. Additionally IR-reflectography was applied on five of these paintings and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and Vis-spectroscopy were used to determine the colorants in the paint layers. In addition, two fake paintings in the style of Campendonk were vestigated to explore the potential for technical investigations in respect to detecting forgeries.
