Overview:

Abstract: The master thesis was written in the course of the project „Beispielhafte Erhaltung von umweltgeschädigten Kulturgütern aus Oolithkalkstein des Savonnières-Typ“ AZ. 28433-45 which was funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). The Lorraine Savonnières-limestones are among one of most important sculptor rocks of the 19th and 20th Century. They were used particularly during Wilhelminian Style (Gründerzeit) in Central Europe for high quality sculptures, delicate ornaments and grave stones. The focus of the thesis is to study the physical properties of rock samples from selected quarries of the Lorraine region and develope a concept for a compatible stone complement system for the preservation of selected objects. By exposure to harmful environmental influences on Oolithlimestone of the Savonnières type, these objects show a variety of weathering phenomena which are described and characterized in a glossary of weathering performance. Based on the existing literature and own investigations, pointing morta and protective wash covers based on different lime binder have been tested and evaluated.
