Overview:

Abstract: Due to its problematic weathering behavior ?Zwickauer Kohlesandstein? is considered to be a monument rock which is difficult to preserve. To extend our knowledge about the characteristics, the weathering and the possibilities of consolidation, laboratory experiments on samples from removal material of Planitz Castle were conducted. To simulate different kinds of initial states which can influence the stone?s properties and the success of treatment, the samples were first subjected to different preconditioning processes of temperature cycling and salt contamination. A range of different microscopic and technical studies on mineral composition, structure, pore space and moisture and strength-related parameters formed the basis for the assessment of rock properties, weathering behavior and successful consolidation. Three different strengthening methods on silicat acid ester base were compared.
