Franziska Sommer: Conservational aspects concerning the handling of playing-cards of the Stadtmuseum Berlin. Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The Ephraim-Palais, the museum of which is part of Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, houses a rather small but culturally important collection of about 65 sets of playing-cards dating from approximately 1770 to the beginning of the 20th century. These playing cards originate from former Prussia and are in some cases still in complete sets.
This thesis gives a general description of the production techniques of European playing cards from the period in question as well as a description of their condition today by reference to representative examples from the museums
collection. The influence of endogenous factors, for instance composition of materials and their ageing process, and exogenous factors, like frequency and manner of usage, are being examined and assessed. On this basis, recommendations for adequate handling concerning usage and exhibition as well as optimised storage are given.
