Overview:

Abstract: This survey ties in with the desideratum of research regarding wooden panels showing coats of arms. It examines the up to now publicly unnoticed baroque panel of the coat of arms of Friedrich Schenk von Winterstetten, related to the church of St. Mary in the city of Celle, Lower Saxony. A close investigation of the object with respect to both cultural and natural scientific interests leads to a concept of conservation and restoration measures. These subsequently constitute the basis for answering one of the main questions concerning the reusability of the panel as a former interior piece for the community of St. Mary’s church. In addition, an art historical classification amongst the sacral context is made. Referring to this, the main focus is put on the determination of differences between panels of coat of arms and so called “dead-shields”. The results of the present elaboration may finally contribute to further investigations in terms of „Panels of Coat of Arms“.
