Abstract: In this bachelor thesis the relevance of surface cleaning and the use of cosmetic sponges in paper conservation will be tested. The issue is whether the reasons for the application are and if the products which have their origin in the cosmetic field are reliable. For an example polyurethane sponges from a conservation store have been investigated visually and microscopically concerning their properties, handling and effects on the paper surface. Although these cleaning materials have good attributes there are obscurities about ingredients and their potential impacts on paper. For this purpose, pursuing test methods are exemplified and possibilities of the realisation of an advanced Oddy test. In a subsequent determination of degree of polymerization of the paper will be described precisely.
