Overview:

Abstract: Tearing is the most common damage seen in aging paper documents. To repair these, it is necessary to use efficient, sustainable methods and materials. However, this requires extensive expertise in tearing and its causes. A survey of the literature focuses on Bas van Velzen’s classification of tears and the causes of rips and tears, particularly in acidic and wood-containing papers.
Based on Stefanie Volmer’s thesis that a tear is comparable to a cut, it was investigated as to whether or not these can be used for the development of test papers to analyze tensile strength. Test papers were defined, produced and compared with original papers with tears by way of measurement techniques. In addition to measuring tensile strength, other topographical characteristics and material properties of the papers were documented, taking ph value and grain into consideration.
