Overview:

Abstract: The thesis deals with the examination and conservation of an 15./16. century obituary roll from the Benedictine abbey of Michaelbeuern. The object consists of three parts: a parchment scroll, composed of four sheets, a protective piece of leather at the end and a wooden coil at the beginning of the scroll. The parchment scroll and the wooden coil are joined by three iron nails. The scroll starts with a miniature painting, which is followed by 92 entries from different monasteries. Most of the entries were written with iron gall ink.
Particular attention was paid to the historical context of the obituary roll, the examination and the material analysis of the inks.
The main focus of the conservation concept is the consolidation of the painting layer and on filling in areas of loss, caused by the rusting nails on the upper half of the miniature. Previous to this conservation measure, different adhesives were tested. In order to keep the introduction of moisture into the parchmet as low as possible, a remoistenable tissue was used to stabilize the areas around the losses.
