Amélie Bézard: Japanese lacquer bottles from the Schönbrunn Palace. Examination – Preservation – Presentation Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The Japanese lacquer bottles presented in the “Chinese Oval Cabinet” are a precious example of Japanese art in Europe. This thesis focuses on the conservation of these ten vessels. A detailed investigation of the objects’ construction and decoration precedes the evaluation of the damages. The bottles have been stained disruptively with an adhesive. Furthermore, they have been damaged by UV-light, which results in enhanced vulnerability. Therefore, the choice of suitable methods for removing the staining is limited. Moreover, an adhesive for the consolidation of flaking lacquer and metal sheets is determined. A guideline for presenting and handling the bottles is established.
