Overview:

Abstract: In the impressive group of Carinthian Lenten Veils, the Lenten Veil of Kraßnitz is an exceptionally colourful record of religious 17th-century folk art. The Lenten Veil is introduced in context to its historical tradition, use and iconography. Its painting technology is compared to other Carinthian Lenten Veils based on conservational and scientific analyses. Severe water damage in the Veil´s lower part caused damage to the paint layer. The linen is in an advanced state of degradation. “De-restoration” involves the removal of partial patches from previous conservation treatments, which led to tears and must be removed before a support backing can be sewn on. The paint layer that is broken due to rolled storage must be consolidated. Furthermore, better storage facilities will be suggested.
