Pieter Hellbach: The development of a monitoring concept for a sandstone monument exposed to weathering „Häerdgeslay“ Altlinster/G.D: Luxembourg Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The Gallo-Roman tomb Häerdgeslay which is part of an ancient sanctuary near the town of Altlinster/G.D. Luxembourg is threatened by exposure to weathering. In an effort to preserve the 2000-year old testimony of human culture, a monitoring-concept is developed. The monument consists of lime-based sandstone and exhibits a relief. Large parts show signs of salt efflorence and microbiological colonization. Its secluded location and the consequential absence of infrastructure, as well as the steep hillside it sits on, complicate work and encourage vandalism. Moreover few is known of its history which compromits the estimation of the rate of decay.
The thesis collects data on the monument‘s history and localization, describes and investigates phenomena via descriptive and chemical-physical examinations. Furthermore, it lists the requirements, obstacles and advantages of a recurrent surveillance.
