Luisa Tischer: Latex cleaning - Investigation to the arrears Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Latex cleaning in the field of conservation has only been used in recent years, and has not yet been fully tested and researched to be aware of the possible methods, as well as how it ages and effects the cleaned surfaces. Using this cleaning method, a modified white-yellow liquid latex surface is applied either with a brush, a roller, or via a spray applicati- on. This liquid latex mixture vulcanizes on the surface of the object, and binds the debris particles that reside in the matrix. The rate at which it vulcanizes depends on the subsurface, water intake, climate, the thick- ness of the application, the contents of the application, and the debris’ composition. During the vulcanization, the latex film turns transparent and can then be removed from the object’s surface.
In this Bachelor thesis, the residue left behind on the object’s surface following a latex film cleaning is examined more closely. The residue flu- oresces white when under ultraviolet light. It is unknown which substance it is; therefore, samples of latex products that are available in Germany were tested. The samples have been heavily researched under ultraviolet light as well as been artificially aged in an accelerated weathering apparatus.
