Michael Bollwein: The so-called „Cabinet of Prince Eugene“ - investigation, technological analysis and exemplary treatment Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Baroque cabinets often represent outstanding works of craftsmanship. The so-called
“Cabinet of Prince Eugene” consists of a wooden body and is decorated with silver figures
and tortoiseshell. The diploma thesis deals with the varied history of the cabinet. A condition
survey as well as a detailed examination of the object’s construction and different scientific
analyses clarify the materials and techniques used and form the basis for establishing a
restoration and conservation plan. The main focus lies on the consolidation of tortoiseshell
and the reduction of the corrosion affecting the silver figures. The practical implementation is
undertaken as a treatment model. To ensure the long-term preservation of the object, a
concept for display and storage is elaborated.
