Overview:

Abstract: This diploma project deals with the mending of large tears. A baroque still-life (“peacock and wild fowl”) with a gaping, T-shaped tear in the middle of the painting serves as an example. The main goal of the conservation treatment is to close and stabilize the damaged area in the textile support. Because of its size and the high tension, which is therefore to be expected in the area of the tear, suitable glues and methods, as well as an additional reinforcement of the area must be considered. Investigations into the current state of research, including glues, will be presented and a test series will be compiled. For this purpose tensile tests will be carried out with selected materials.
