Overview:

Abstract: In summary, the thesis at hand discusses the search for a reasonable safeguarding concept for the
endangered sections of the medallion depictions on the south east facade of the frescoes in Ober-Eglfing.
The problem with this object and its particular difficulties are mainly due to the detachment of the
rendering, that are to be found under and between the layers of paint from the painting phases of the years
1762 and 1771. The accurate estimation of the existing damage and its causes are established on the basis
of studies, that I have already presented in the year 2012, as part of my bachelor thesis. Within the scope
of the study at hand, they will be extended with the latest knowledge and evaluated as a whole. My work
mainly focuses on the development and testing of suitable safeguarding methods, that are adjusted to the
specific object and involve appropriate materials. Among other things, a selective safeguarding system was
developed, that has not been used in the field of mural restoration so far. It is based on the process used
for mural restoration in the monastery church of St. Johann in Müstair, and I would like to present it in my
thesis. In addition to the extensive testing on samples, all the restoration and conservation methods
presented in the measure concept are to be applied to the object itself and shall partly be implemented as
an exemplary long-term study with monitoring character.
