Overview:

Abstract: The original oil impregnation embrittled severely the fine cotton support and caused numerous breaks. Due to the microbial attack on the protein media the old lining was incapable of safe stabilization and required its removal. Necessary conservation treatment included break mending. The removal of the residues of the lining media from the original paint layer was carried out by using gel compresses. The theoretical part developed an essentially stiff re-lining by spraying a 10% solution of Acrylharz P550-40. In shear and peel tests it proved best in stiffening the lining support with minimum material, provided satisfactory and even adhesion, open structure and showed no residues after its removal.
