Overview:

Abstract: Books can sometimes have a different cover form than the one we are familiar with. Such a special form is represented by a historical calendar of the 17th century from the Hildesheim City Archives, which is bound as a twin volume. The city archive sees a need for conservation and requests information regarding the special form in addition to conservation recommendations. The property cannot be provided for investigation purposes due to the corona pandemic. Therefore, the head of the archive took pictures. The structure of this work is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the special cover form in general and illuminates its historical context. The second part deals with the twin volume from the city archive. The main concerns, possibilities and limits of a contactless examination are to be shown on the basis of the photos provided. A minimum catalog of requirements sets out the general requirements for a successful condition and damage analysis. This is followed by a concrete examination of the twin volume. The work concludes with recommendations for restoration and conservation measures.
