Dorothea Chiari: Restoration of an Alamannic belt fitting Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to conserve und restore a set of belt fittings made of iron, which are decorated with silver, brass and garnet inlays (Wabentauschierungen). These artifacts of the late seventh century were recovered at Eislingen an der Fils, Baden-Wuerttemberg in 1989. First they are filed historically and compared to similar objects. Next there is a discussion about different methods of removing corrosion from archaeological iron. Special attention is focused on the low pressure hydrogen plasma treatment of archaeological artifacts and the irritability of garnet due to this method, which is used for most of the objects. Finally it is attempted to reconstruct the original appearance of the belt by illustrations.
