Abstract: | This paper documents the conditioning of the painting Blinder Bettler im Café by Josef Scharl from 1927. In order to get an insight into the life and work of the artist, an art-historical classification of the object is prefixed. There are some damage phenomena in the paintings of Josef Scharl which run through his entire œuvre. The comparison with other works brings corresponding insights into the painting style and resulting damage phenomena. In order to secure the condition of the painting a concept is created, which includes measures for the consolidation of the painting layer, as well as the cleaning of the object surface. For this purpose, various materials were compared and tested for their compatibility on the object´s surface. Since the Kunsthalle Emden has quite a comprehensive collection of the artist´s work, the work can serve as a basis for measures on other objects by Josef Scharl. |
