The restitution of museum objects with a colonial background is a hotly debated topic in science, newspapers and social media. Various groups doubt the museums methods of adequate dealing with affected museum collections. In response to the criticism, specific guidelines on how to deal with museum collections with colonial background were published by the umbrella organisations. Currently the focus is on the reprocessing of the collections, provenance research and a dialogue with the source communities. These guidelines are making almost no reference to practical han-dling with these objects. Well known problems, such as bad state of preservation or contaminations caused by biocides are ignored, although the collections are accessible limitedly. Within the scope of the master thesis, the role of the material as well as the role of the field of conservation and restoration, now and then will be evaluated.
