Abstract: Topic of this study is the relic altar which belongs to the cistercian monastery church of loccum, lower saxony, Germany. (Oak, architecture as a house, 194cm x 376cm x 60cm) From the point of view of content the main emphasises include art history, technological examination, the today's condition of the relic altar and the history of restoration. New scientific findings in the chronological classification of single elements of the relic altar manifested by the examinations of the conservator are fixed in a plan. So, for example, alterations of the relic altar which were related in the 19th century are verified in the late middle ages. Furthermore a consecration of an altar in 1244 is connected with the origin of the relic altar. Together with the painting surface from 1850 there is an unity of the general appearance which is noticed for the recommendations of conservation.
