Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This thesis focuses on the development and realisation of a conservation concept for the wall painting, executed in a mineral medium by Friedrich Stummel, at the Seminary in Münster. In addition to a detailed preliminary examination of the object, its art historical importance and placement within Friedrich Stummel’s œuvre is also discussed. An assessment of the painting’s original technique, condition and causes of deterioration was undertaken. On the basis of this information, a conservation methodology was developed and carried out in situ. Significant challenges were the reduction and removal of an inhomogeneous surface veil of lime covering the painting, and the subsequent aesthetic presentation of the painting, taking into account its state of preservation and contextual significance.
