Abstract: The use of silk as a support of European paintings is still insufficient explored. The aim of this thesis was to create an overview about silk and it’s use as a painting support. The widening of silk, its extraction and manufacturing, as well as its structural characteristics were considered. Based on literature researches, the sources of painting techniques and own researches, a survey is given about the known deposits of painted silk and the painting techniques. The range of characteristic damages and their causes are listed. More over some considerations were made about the conservation and restoration of painted silk.
